Northstar of Herschel Island.
Northstar was one of the last sailing fur trading ships used extensively in the Canadian arctic. The 58’ North Star of Herschel Island was built in 1935 in San Francisco, for two Inuvialuit trappers: Fred Carpenter and Jim Wolki.
The boat was launched at Herschel Island and for years her home port was at Sachs Harbour, N.W.T., on Banks Island. The two trappers would use it in the summer sailing season to bring their winter's harvest of furs to market, and to bring goods to Aklavik, Tuktoyaktuk, Inuvik and Herschel Island.
The hull was sheathed in copper to prevent marine growth and damage from ice. The copper in Arnt's wall hung sculpture pieces was under the water for at least 60 years.
Arnt has been a furniture designer/builder and sculptor for over 40 years.
